To many artists collage is a real art form. They take all kinds of three dimensional materials and use them on stiff backgrounds to form interesting collages about their lives. For young children collage is just one of many paper craft ideas that moms and teachers like to use to keep their kids busy. If its a teacher then they will create their collages in school at the same tables they eat out and use their workbooks. If they are doing their crafts at home then they are most likely doing it at a kids activity table their mom put in the kitchen for them to use.
Collage is really the perfect paper craft. It is cheap, easy to prepare and the variations available are endless. It used to be that teachers thought that collage was just taking the little scraps of paper they had left over from preparing other projects and giving them to the kids to glue with. Collage really has lots more depth to it than that. Most teachers begin collage with shape collages. You can do only circle or only square collages or you can mix up all the shapes together and use them all at once. You also have the option of adding more exotic shapes like pentagons and octagons.
Then there are collages that use natural materials that the children find on their nature walks. There are collages using a variety of materials cut up to feel and to paste into pleasing patterns. There are also more sophisticated art collages. This is when the kids get some pictures of inspiration, a topic to work with and materials that are cut into shapes that are suggestive of the subject they are going to collage. collage is a fun, noon threatening activity that kids love because there is so much room for error. It doesn’t' matter what your collage looks like as it is your work, your ideas and your inspiration.
