Help Settling Credit Card Debt

Settling credit card debt can help a person to pay off bad debts and get his or her finances back in order. However, settling credit card debt without professional help is not easy. A person should know what he or she is doing before calling up creditors and asking them to settle credit card debt.

Some debts can be settled while others cannot. A person can reach a settlement on debts involving credit card usage as well as students loans and hospital bills. First of all, it is important to talk with the right people. In some cases the creditor has turned the debt over to a collection agency; a person that wants to reach a settlement would then need to contact the agency in question.

Reaching a Settlement with a Credit Card Company

If you still have a credit account with the company, then you should work towards credit card debt negotiation with the company. No one enjoys being hounded by a collections department or having the pressure of unpaid debts.

An account should be over three months old before one offers a debt settlement. Typically, people offer around fifty to seventy five percent of the money owed as the full repayment.

Talking with the collections department is not easy. The employees of such a department will almost always pressure a borrower to commit to repaying the debt in full. However, one should always remain calm and composed when speaking with the collections department. Explain that you are financially unable to offer full repayment and offer a settlement instead.

While credit card companies do not like to lose money, they stand to lose even more if the client files for bankruptcy. For this reason, many credit card companies are willing to consider a settlement.

Reaching a Settlement with a Debt Collection Agency

When reaching a settlement with a debt collection agency, you would need to send the settlement offer in writing by registered mail. Only offer about twenty percent of the money owed. Keep a copy of all correspondence to and from the debt collection agency. Finally, make sure that the debt collection agency marks the settlement as ‘settled’ instead of ‘paid collection’. The latter marking will have a negative impact on your credit score.
