As someone who has purchased and installed a metal carport I can tell you from first hand experience that it may not go as smoothly as you think.
There are several items you will need to consider prior to buying the carport of your choice. Since I already went through the experience I thought I would share a little bit of insight.
Check Your Homeowners Association First
This one is one of the most forgotten parts of the process but is one of the most important one. As a homeowner you agreed to abide by your housing addition’s covenants and restrictions. Some do not allow the placement of a carport or any other type of shelter. So it’s important that before you go out and spend hundreds of dollars on a carport that you check your HOA and see if you can put one on your property.
Keep in mind that you may be given permission but may still have to meet certain standards that have been set by your HOA’s architectural committee.
City Building Permits
The next item to check is with the building or code department in your city. Often times you will need a permit to place a carport on your property. The cool thing is that it’s not a big ordeal and should not take longer than a few hours to apply, pay for, and receive your permit. The cost also is minimal and should cost more than $10-$15 at the most.
Installation and Maintenance
The one thing I highly recommend is that you let the dealer install the carport kit. They have probably installed dozens of them and will do your quickly and correctly.
Metal carports require very little in the way of maintenance so you can rest assured your vehicle will have a worry-free shelter for may years to come.
